The reader has a one-to-one relationship with the characters you create through the words on the page. The writer is, therefore, the medium of that communication so it is our job to shape the story into a form that is a satisfying reading experience.

It is crucial that you understand that the success of your romance fiction depends on your ability to shape and mould your story into the best and most compelling form possible. So many writers have excellent ideas for stories, but they don’t come to life on the page.

You can visualise in your mind the scene when the couple meet for the first time, what they look like, what they say and do and what happens next to pull them apart until they can be together again.

The storyteller in you creates the internal and external world of that story idea.

The best way to make sure that your story and the emotional journey of your hero and heroine are both compelling and irresistible to readers is to use story structure and story craft techniques.

Think of it this way. The basic story is like a solid lump of fine marble which you have cut out from the rock face.

The writer’s role is to carve out the story which they know is trapped inside and polish it until it is as clear as possible.

Why is this so important?

Because modern readers expect to be entertained.

There are certain storytelling conventions which have become engrained into our minds through every book that we have ever read, and every play, radio drama, TV show or movie that we have ever seen, from animated cartoons to the latest special effect blockbuster.

You may not even be aware of these subconscious expectations because they are totally enmeshed in our brains, but as readers we expect the story to be developed in a certain pattern and sequence of events and revelations and stages.

That is why we need Story Craft and, in particular, Story Structure.

Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it. Michelangelo
